OUR STORY

On The GO Baseball is a program developed to give the youth of our community an opportunity to develop their passion for the sport. It is also designed to introduce the sport to those that may not have had the chance yet. There are many coaches and instructors that preach winning first and foremost. But the respect for the game is much more important!

Our SCORE model for instructing focuses on having respect for Self-Coaches-Opponents-Rules-Equipment. We are certified Double-Goal Coaches by the Positive Coaching Alliance. That program stresses the importance of being a positive role model and teaching life lessons while coaching and instructing.

There have been many influential coaches, teachers and mentors that have assisted with our development. Now it's time to make that knowledge available and share those experiences with the next generation!

If you have a child who is a baseball fanatic, and would benefit from diving deeper into the game's history as well as learn life lessons through the game you are at the right place.

On the other hand, if you have a child who is just getting started, and may not feel confident yet, we also love introducing the game, and teaching the fact that the game is one of failure. And coming back from striking out or missing a grounder is just as important as making the great play every time.

Gary Oversen - Head Baseball Instructor

I played baseball from t-ball all the way up through college. I played on some fantastic teams with some amazing players, having had the opportunity to play in both major league and minor league ballparks. I am proud to have had some true inspirations as coaches and teachers and have always wanted to inspire the next generation. I have coached both youth and high school athletics, so I understand the desire to win and be competitive. But I also understand that the game needs to be respected, and the only way to do that is to play with class and good sportsmanship first and foremost.

As a player - I was a shortstop/centerfielder from t-ball (5 yrs old) up to majors (12). I was also a pitcher. I was used late in the game, mostly as a closer because I developed a curveball that was hard to hit. I then played outfield, 2nd, and 3rd my first year of Babe Ruth (13). Then mainly 2nd the next two years. I then played mainly 2nd, 3rd and outfield the remainder of my career. I played three years of varsity baseball and a year and a half of college ball. I was mainly a spray hitter with most of my balls being hit the opposite way. I hit left-handed and throw right. I was not the fastest player on the field, but I took extra bases when there were opportunities available. I watched players like Will Clark, Brett Butler and old footage of Willie Mays, and I learned the correct way to play the game.

As a coach - I was able to coach while still in high school with the Police Activities League. It was a great experience and I learned how to command attention and coach effectively. After my playing career ended, I coached at my former high school and helped lead them back to the NCS tournament. I have recently been associated with the Junior Giants program which is a great experience for all the kids involved! I coach to the strengths of the children. I am one to encourage and refine, as opposed to showing vocal disapproval. This system may take a little longer, but is more permanent when they get it. Muscle memory is key to the game, and when a swing, throw, or movement towards the ball is a reaction as opposed to an idea, that is when you know you got it!

TEAM STRUCTURE

The structure of our program will make it easy for both coaches as parents to follow. The primary focus will be on character building and practicing good sportsmanship while following the SCORE model. We will win by playing the game with honor and respect.

Teams are set up as follows:

Manager

Asst. Manager

Asst. Manager

Team Parent

Asst. Team Parent

12 Permanent Players (a balanced roster and players will be encouraged in practice to understand all positions)

3 Alternate Players (who may also serve as part of our "Broadcast Team" during games and will be primarily pitchers)

What is a broadcast team?

As part of our vision to broaden baseball's horizons in the eyes of our players, we are introducing them to all aspects of the game. We will have players who enjoy the statistical part of the game, and they will be encouraged to do research on historical stats that relate to todays players. We will also nurture their broadcasting talents by having a youth "broadcast team" who will provide the play by play and we will eventually start to stream it online for anyone to hear (and will be archived). So anyone with dreams of becoming the next Jon Miller or Kruk and Kuip, will have the opportunity with On The GO Baseball.

There will also be occasional workshops on sports journalism and how to properly write quality news articles for national media sites.

We want to ensure that every young baseball enthusiast is given the chance to cultivate their talents. Not all young baseball players will end up playing the game as a career. But many might still want a career around the game, and it would benefit them to develop those skills and keep their passion alive.

We are always looking for new talent to add to the program. Our normal practice times are Sundays at Roseview Park at Noon, just show up with or without a glove!
