Physical Education

Our Physical Education class introduces fun and exciting games and activities to work out the mind and the body. Along with using the SCORE model (respect for Self, Coaches, Opponents, Rules, and Equipment) students are also taught the Six Pillars of Character (Togetherness, Respectfulness, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship) using the Character Counts grade appropriate curriculum. Here is a video that gives an idea of the curriculum. Classes are 90 minutes for 1st-8th grade, 60 minutes for 9th-12th, and we provide a 30 minute program for our Kindergarten class!

High School Math

This class is supplemental to each students' math curriculum they are using at home. Parents and the teacher will stay in contact weekly via email to make sure the tutoring in class is on the specific improvements needed in math. It's Math Study Hall, with a tutor!

My teaching style is similar to the mantra of “slow and steady wins the race” (though it is not a
race). I teach by leading students from a concepts they're familiar with and I use these to
explain the unfamiliar and new, followed by practice and exciting and fun activities. My goal is
not for students to love math, but for them to not hate it because then they have hope that
they can and will succeed!

● What to bring to class:
○ On The GO Academy provides pencils, rulers, writing/graph paper, and erasers.
○ Bring Your Own Calculator (optional)

I look forward to sharing my love for math and education with everyone, so join me as we learn
that “success starts with asking for help”.

Sheet Music

Music: Link UP Sac Philharmonic

The students will be learning from our OTGA instructor using a Carnegie Hall curriculum. Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra has partnered with Carnegie Hall to reach students across the nation to become more engaged with Musical Arts. They will primarily be learning songs using recorders and engaging sing alongs as well as learning how to read notes, and coordinate rhythm and beat. The end of the school year (end of April) the students will be going to downtown Sacramento auditorium and gather together with many other schools and participating in a huge production concert along with SPO.

We have known the SPO director for many years and he has worked with public schools for the past productions. For the first time we are now able have homeschool students participate in this wonderful program too.

The show this past April was AMAZING! The students worked throughout the school year to be a part of a big production and the excitement filled the room! The students and staff of SPO came together and put on a great show and had a real fun time

Improv/Drama

This  Drama class combines a touch of musical theatre, with improv and acting! But what’s really special about this drama class are the confidence building life skills built right into the games and activities. The greatest part about acting is learning that there is freedom in fourm. That means whatever the medium, there are rules that apply and within those boundaries or systems the sky becomes the limit! This class is perfect for all ages (though we do have students separated into two age groups due to attention span limits and learning needs.) We will be doing skits, improvisation, and a touch of singing too! We will absolutely be putting together a little holiday special for our friends and family too (closer to the Christmas Season.)

Creative Writing

This creative writing class is designed to bring out the most introverted poet and short story teller out there. Students will learn how to structure their poems and develop great characters for their short stories. Many of the poems and short stories developed in the class will be featured in both our newsletter and a possible end of year yearbook.

We will also learn about famous quotes and their authors, and what inspired them. Lyrics from famous songs may also be used to show how creative a person can be.

Chalkboard with Different Languages

Spanish

Using Total Physical Response (TPR) is an important element of the Spanish curriculum used at On The GO. Studies in brain functionality and linguistics show that TPR facilitates foreign language acquisition for all age groups.  TPR activates various motor cortices of the brain, making it easier to learn Spanish than you’d ever thought possible!
Throughout this introductory phase, words and structures are combined in novel ways and practiced using gestures.  Whenever possible, previously taught vocabulary is also inserted as review.  By presenting words in context rather than in isolation, the students quickly develop a “feel” for the patterns and flow of the Spanish language.  An intuitive understanding of the rules of language always precedes formal language study as we learn our first language.  Our Spanish curriculum logically employs this natural sequencing as well.

On The GO Sports
Education

Taught by an On The GO Sports coach, Sports Education goes a bit deeper into the history, strategies, and even the impact on society of a specific sport. Student/athletes will be given instruction on how to play with respect and fairness while striving to succeed. Following the principles of SCORE. Having respect for Self, Coaches, Opponents, Rules, and Equipment. Training is 90 minutes once per week (students may sign up for additional days per week if they like). Sports that are taught will be on a rotating schedule starting with Flag Football (8 weeks), Basketball (8 weeks), and Baseball (8 weeks). If we have enough students, we will compete with other schools. There is a separate fee to participate in team sports (charter funds not allowed).
We also offer a classroom-based Sports Education class that focuses more on the strategies and mental side of the game. We will still be active in this class, but the primary goal is to enhance the learning done outdoors.

Every class we will work on something brand new!

Study Group

The Great Debate Class

The Great Debate Class was created specifically to teach young adults how to argue intelligently. Using a new topic each week, students will be asked to create an argument for or against each theme. They will not know what side of the debate they will be on until they come to class that day, which forces them to see both sides in order to prepare. This will give each student the "other side of the coin" learning that is necessary to debate properly. (Since you will already have researched the other side, and should know ways to argue against them). This class will be good for both expressive students as well as introverts. Those that are very engaging will get to practice thinking on their feet, and responding intelligently. Those that are more reserved will be able to see how opinions can be expressed and rejected without embarrassment.

Reading & Writing All Levels: Brave Writer

We are using the Brave Writer concept in our writing classes and our goal is to get our students to gain more interest and excitement for writing!

The approach used will be between Arrow and Boomerang literature. This class is held on Thursdays for 12 weeks during the semester and we will be reading one book each semester. It is not a requirement for the students to be using Brave Writer at home.

Each child is on their own individual journey of writing. We will begin our class in the partnership writing phase and then go into the faltering ownership phase. Some children may not be ready for the next phase and that's okay. We will not keep the entire class on the same phase. They can all be in various writing stages and still learn together. Those who can do more will do more and move into faltering ownership phase easily on their own. The approach to BW and the best part of it all is for the students to realize they can successfully write all on their own and actually enjoy it too!

This Fall semester we will be reading short chapters in class and materials are not needed at this time. We will take turns reading for those who feel comfortable reading out loud and all will feel comfortable shortly after the semester begins. For those who are struggling readers, have no fear we can work around it.

At times there will be homework but mostly it will be to elaborate on what was not finished in class and to complete an assigned essay towards the end of the semester.

We will be choosing a book that has a movie connection and final day of semester we’ll have a movie party!

Books

Spanish 4 Kids

Spanish 4 Kids is an active-learning introduction into the Spanish language. Each week, the students will learn basic words, numbers, months, colors and more to prepare students for more advanced learning. We will use relay race quizzes, sing songs, and do other engaging activities to help in the learning process. Spanish 4 Kids is a fun way to introduce young students to the basics of Spanish!
